Battery Voltage Low

The computer keeps track of the battery voltage to ensure it's high enough to run systems. If it drops below about 9.5 volts, you’ll see this code.

The ECM monitors battery voltage through a voltage sensor. If voltage readings go below 9.5 volts for more than a few seconds, it triggers this fault code.

Don't just throw parts at it. Walk through these in order — each step tells you whether to keep going or stop and fix what you found.

1. 11. Check the battery voltage with a multimeter; it should be at least 12.4 volts when off and 13.5 to 14.7 volts when running. Decision: If below 12.4 volts, proceed to step 2; if OK, check for other codes.
2. 22. Inspect battery terminals for corrosion, ensure they are clean and tight. Decision: If faulty, clean or replace; if OK, proceed to step 3.
3. 33. Test the alternator output; should be at least 13.5 volts. Decision: If it's low, alternator may be bad; replace it. If it's OK, proceed to step 4.
4. 44. Look for any aftermarket equipment that could cause a parasitic draw, like alarms or radios. Disconnect these to test. Decision: If removing fixes the issue, investigate further; if nothing found, wiring issues might exist.
